Press Release Bill 52 Nov 19 2018

For Immediate Release

November 19, 2018

Farmers and Organizations across B.C. co-sign letter to Premier endorsing ALC Bill 52

A diverse group of farmers, environmental groups and food security organizations have jointly signed a letter to Premier Horgan in support of Bill 52, the Agricultural Land Commission Amendment Act of 2018.

This bill, currently under debate in the B.C. Legislature, aims to strengthen the Agricultural Land Reserve by addressing ALR mega-mansions and speculation, cracking down on illegal dumping on farmland and restoring the integrity of the ALR.

“This bill is a good step towards preserving farmland for farmers and farming by reducing the increasing pressures on one of our province’s greatest assets, our Agricultural Land Reserve,” says Michelle Li from Richmond FarmWatch.

“The proposed Bill 52 is a welcome change that will, if passed, address some of the biggest issues facing our food system in the long term,” says Anita Georgy, Executive Director of FarmFolk CityFolk. “Keeping our farm land clean, and financially accessible for farming is incredibly important.”

Harold Steves, long-time farmer and director of the Farmland Defence League of BC, supports the bill and wants to see our government not only protect what we have, but look to add to the Agricultural Land Reserve that he was instrumental in founding. “We need only look south of the border to see our food supply at risk with drought and devastating fires in California. We must take action now to ensure that farmland is preserved for future generations.”

Adam Renner of Adili Farms adds, “There is no hope for the future of small scale family farming if farmland is overvalued.” Bill 52 works to address that issue.

“We are optimistic that Bill 52 is moving forward and we want to ensure the Premier and our elected officials know just how important this legislation is to British Columbians. We can no longer allow farmland to be lost to non-farm uses. We are co-signing this endorsement of Bill 52 with these groups to ensure that farmland preservation is prioritized in B.C.,” said Michelle Li.

Honorable John Horgan, Premier

cc: Lana Popham, B.C Minister of Agriculture

cc: Andrew Weaver, Leader of the Green Party

16 November 2018

Dear Premier Horgan,

Bill 52, the Agricultural Land Commission Amendment Act of 2018, currently being debated in the B.C. Legislature, is of high priority to British Columbians who value farmland preservation and food security for the future.

Increasing rates of residential uses in the Agricultural Land Reserve, illegal and toxic fill being dumped on farmland, along with a changing climate, are threatening farms and food security in British Columbia.

We are encouraged that Bill 52 is ensuring the province is taking steps to alleviate these issues.

We, the undersigned, are pleased to endorse Bill 52 and ask that you prioritize the strengthening of the Agricultural Land Reserve, farming and food security, by passing this important bill.

Sincerely,

FarmFolk CityFolk, B.C.
